Congratulations to these members of the NIU College of Education family!

Xiaodan Hu, assistant professor of Higher Education in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education, is the recipient of an American Educational Research Association Grants Research Award for “A Head Start to College: Does Dual Enrollment Equalize Students’ Academic and Labor Market Success in STEM?”

Research awarded encompasses relevant and innovative topics in education research that addresses or ultimately informs STEM, education policy, and equity and inclusion in education. The grant recipients are selected from a highly competitive applicant pool and through a rigorous proposal review process.

Gudrun Nyunt

Gudrun Nyunt, assistant professor of Higher Education in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education, received the Betty L. Harrah Journal Manuscript of the Year Award for 2022 from the Association of College & University Housing Officers-International.

Nyunt’s article examined “Working in Residence Life During a Pandemic.”

The Journal Manuscript of the Year Award is given based on the quality of writing; organization in the design of the article; research methodology; significance to the housing field; educational value of the manuscript; creativity or originality of the approach; applicability or usability of the article to housing programs; and its overall contribution to the field.

Emerson Sebastião
Emerson Sebastião

Emerson Sebastião, assistant professor and director of the Health and Exercise Research Group in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, will speak to an international audience on the topic of physical activity and healthy aging as part of an online round-table discussion scheduled for Wednesday, April 6.

Organized by the Latin American Association of Sport Science, Physical Education and Dance, the webinar also will feature speakers Ariel Friedman from Panama and Heida Joaquim from the Dominican Republic.

Sebastião is a native of Brazil.

Gabrielle Bennett

Gabrielle Bennett, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education who works with Project FLEX, has been named a Carter G. Woodson Scholar for the 2022-2023 academic year by the NIU Graduate School and the Rhoten A. Smith/Underrepresented Fellowship Committee.

Open to Ph.D. and Ed.D. students only, the Woodson Scholar Program provides financial support to U.S. citizens who are African-Americans, Latino or Native Americans to begin or to complete their doctoral degrees.

The program carries a stipend of $19,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year along with partial tuition-waiver scholarship for the Fall 2022, Spring 2023 and Summer 2023 semesters.

Meanwhile, the Graduate School named two College of Education doctoral students among the recipients of 2022-23 Part-time Dissertation Completion Fellowships, which provide one year of support to complete dissertations.

  • Cynthia Padilla-Gaytan, pursuing an Ed.D. in Community College Leadership.
  • Lisa Lazansky-Roach, pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology.
