Google that: ‘Go Beyond the Stacks’ uses Google Scholar to gain full text, citations

Did you know that you can link Google Scholar to full text of materials from Northern Illinois University Libraries? Here’s how:

In Google Scholar, use the menu button on the upper left-hand corner of the screen to navigate to Settings.

  • Click on Library Links.
  • Search for Northern Illinois University.
  • Check off “Northern Illinois University – View It @ NIU”
  • Save.

Your search results will now include “View It @ NIU” links. For more information about using View IT @ NIU to access full text, see Using FIND IT to Access the Full Text.

Citation chaining with Google Scholar

Google Scholar also allows you to see who’s cited the articles that interest you. This is similar to looking at the reference list to find additional sources. However, when you look at reference lists, you will always find articles that are older than the one you’re reading, whereas looking at the “Cited By” list shows you who’s cited the article since it was published. Just click on the “cited by” link below the article to see articles that have cited the one you’re interested in.
