Congratulations to these members of the NIU College of Education family!
Five graduate students in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education’s M.S.Ed. in Counseling program were awarded the Jerry J. Murphy Master Scholarship, funded by the Aurora, Illinois-based INC Mental Health Alliance.
Tiffany Clash-Shaw, Veronica Giambrone, Mikaela Keeney, Alyson Martinez Yanez and Samara Ramirez each received $2,000.
Jerry J. Murphy scholarships are available to graduate students of Latino descent with bilingual and bicultural proficiency who are studying to pursue careers in mental health services.
A unique partnership of seven township community mental health 708 boards in the south Kane County area, INC works closely with local area schools, universities, service providers, agencies, hospitals, the health department, other local funders and more to keep on top of available community mental health services and to plan for their delivery to any resident in need.

Latisha Houston, M.S.Ed. in Special Education: Visual Disabilities, ’92, has been appointed superintendent of the Illinois Center for Rehabilitation and Education (ICRE-Wood) in Chicago.
ICRE-Wood assists adults who are blind or visually impaired in rediscovering their independence and freedom through vocational and skills training programs that prepare them for employment, education and self-reliance.
Houston, who joined the Illinois Department of Human Services in May 1995, began her career at ICRE-Wood as a rehabilitation/mobility instructor. After 11 years there, she worked in the private sector as a field-based rehabilitation teacher
Returning to ICRE-Wood in 2016, Houston served as interim program director for three years before officially taking on that role. She also chaired the Illinois Braille Committee for several years.
Her career began in Rockford, where she taught at the Center for Sight and Hearing.
