Congratulations to these members of the NIU College of Education family!

Paul Wright, the EC Lane and MN Zimmerman Endowed Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, was inducted as a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology (NAK).

Wright was among 18 new fellow inducted at the organization’s 91st Annual Meeting, held from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 in Providence, R.I.

NAK fellows – one of the highest honors in our field – are nominated by their peer fellows, evaluated by a membership committee according to criteria set forth in the academy’s bylaws and then voted into membership by the voting members of the academy.

Wright, who is also chair of the Research Council for SHAPE America, presented on “Sport and Physical Activity for Positive Youth Development Related to Social and Emotional Learning” during the conference on “Translating and Implementing Kinesiology Research into Society.”

Jim Ressler, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, is among 10 NIU faculty members selected to participate in this year’s Emerging Faculty Leaders Program.

The Emerging Faculty Leaders Program, which aims to bolster leadership capacity across campus, delivers an intensive professional development experience to faculty who are ready to expand their capacity for leadership in higher education and who are committed to enhancing their contribution to the university.

NIU faculty members can and do serve in a wide range of leaderships roles, including as department chairs, center directors, principal investigators, search committee members, task force participants, professional organization leaders, university council members, faculty senators and expert sources in the news media.

Gudrun Nyunt and Quortne Hutchings, assistant professors in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education, were awarded a research grant from the American College Personnel Association Foundation.

Nyunt and Hutchings, members of the department’s Higher Education and Student Affairs faculty, will conduct a a study titled, “The Future of Higher Education and Student Affairs: An Exploration of BIPOC Graduate Students’ Expectations for Working Conditions.”

They hope to involve master’s students as co-researchers in this project as they “believe this will be a great opportunity for them to gain some research experience while reflecting on what they are looking for in a future job.”

ACPA officials are eager for Nyunt and Hutchings to share their scholarship through journal submissions and a presentation at the 2024 ACPA Convention in Chicago.
