Michelle Sands, assistant professor of Special Education in the Department of Special and Early Education, has joined Illinois’ Pyramid Model State Leadership Team (SLT).

The Illinois SLT recognizes that the Pyramid Model – a conceptual framework of evidence-based practices for promoting young children’s healthy social and emotional development – emphasizes strong relationships, support for social competence and the prevention of challenging behaviors.

Illinois SLT member collaborate with the Pyramid Model Consortium to train Illinois early childhood professionals across the state in professional development systems that work together to strengthen interagency collaboration at the state and local levels.

Sands will serve on the Professional Development Workgroup, which develops the process for creating a master cadre of trainers, coaches and external facilitators of program-wide leadership teams. This workgroup is the hub of coordinating the on-going in-service work around the Pyramid Model.

Her first official event is a Sept. 25 retreat, followed by participation in a Nov. 3 event – State Day: Building State Capacity to Align I/ECMHC and the Pyramid Model – in advance of the Midwest Pyramid Model Summit scheduled for Nov. 4 in Naperville.
