Congratulations to these members of the NIU College of Education family!
Jocelynne Escontrias, a senior Elementary Education major, is among 23 Huskies chosen to receive the 2022 Outstanding Women and Gender Advocacy Student Award given by the NIU Presidential Commission on the Status of Women.
This award recognizes students who demonstrate active engagement in women’s issues and gender advocacy, have nontraditional aspirations and/or have overcome adversity in pursuing their education.
Such engagement can include acting as a caregiver while pursuing an NIU education, studying in a nontraditional program, being involved in university or community organizations advocating women’s issues and gender advocacy and serving as a role model for the NIU community.
Escontrias, a member of the second cohort of PLEDGE students at Elgin Community College, will become the first in her family to receive a college degree when she graduates Saturday, May 14 – and she credits her family’s support in her pursuit of this goal and her nearly 4.0 GPA.
While at NIU, she has been active in the De Mujer a Mujer student organization and currently serves on its executive board. She also offered a valuable contribution to the Huntley/Marengo community, when she co-hosted a math workshop in Spanish for parents to teach them how to help their children with math, even if the parents did not have expertise in mathematics.
Believing that “learning is a lifelong process,” Escontrias hopes to return to the NIU College of Education in the future to pursue a master’s degree in Instructional Technology or Curriculum and Instruction.
