Stephanie DeSpain, assistant professor of Early Childhood Education in the Department of Special and Early Education, is among three winners of NIU’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Awards for 2022.
The Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award encourages and honors outstanding teaching at NIU. It also promotes discussion about teaching excellence and improvement on campus. Undergraduate students have a major role in selecting faculty for the annual award.

Melissa Fickling, associate professor in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education, has been named the Honors Program’s inaugural Rachowicz Faculty Fellow.
The Rachowicz fellowship is meant to encourage courses that are interdisciplinary and emphasize interconnectivity, communication and the importance of being committed to service in private and professional contexts.
Students enrolling in Fickling’s “Work, Meaning and Wellness” course will consider historical and philosophical perspectives on the role of work in life, as well as critique popular narratives around passion, career choice and happiness.

Quortne R. Hutchings, assistant professor in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education, was featured April 8 at the QUIC (Qualitative Inquiry Collaborative) Online Speaker Series. Hutchings presented “Let’s Have a Kiki: Black Queer Storytelling and Podcasting.”
The QUIC highlights varied qualitative research designs, methods, and approaches through reflections on research projects and publications.
Events feature faculty presentations and open question-and-answer session for an interdisciplinary audience of graduate students and members of the NIU community.

Gunel Karimova, who has spent the last several months at the NIU College of Education, delivered a noon-hour presentation April 12 on “A Fulbright Visitor from a Small but Beautiful Country.”
Karimova spoke about the geographic location, history and oil-rich economy of Azerbaijan to its culture, music, traditions, food, festivals, places to visit and notable people.
Karimova is a Writing and Information Literacy instructor and junior faculty member at ADA University in Baku, Azerbaijan.
