Congratulations to these members of the NIU College of Education family!

David Walker, associate dean for Academic Affairs, and Tom Smith, professor in the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment, both received the 2021 “Beyond the Call” award from the Mid-Western Education Research Association (MWERA).

The award recognizes members who consistently and over a substantial period of time (more than 20 years) participate in all aspects of the annual conference and the MWERA organization in terms of membership; conference proposal review; presentation of peer-reviewed research; graduate student and early-professional mentoring; service on organizational committees; being elected as MWERA officers; and being on the MWERA board.

MWERA rarely confers its Beyond the Call award because of the required longevity and active engagement over that time, making it an impressive feat that two faculty members from the same university were chosen in the same year.

Chris Lowe, program adviser for Elementary Education and Middle Level Teaching and Learning in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, recently had his next book accepted for publication by the University of Louisiana Press.

Titled “Make Some Wretched Fool to Pay: Stories,” the book is a collection of short fiction set largely in Louisiana, east Texas and Mississippi.

Its stories are focused on the fraught relationship between parents and their children, and also examine the power imbalances in high school and college football, in the contemporary Deep South.

Publication is slated for 2023.
