NIU librarians seek input during review of books to keep, remove from collection

NIU Libraries is evaluating its book collection for the College of Education.

A strong library collection is current and meets the needs of both today’s and future generations.

To do this, it’s important to continue adding new books and withdrawing less-used books regularly. By carefully curating the collection, it becomes easier to browse, more accessible, takes up less space and circulates more.

With that in mind, librarians would like to withdraw books from Founders that fit ALL the following criteria:

  • Books that were published before 2000, AND
  • Have not been borrowed since 2002, AND
  • That there are at least two other copies that would remain available in Illinois from I-Share.

It is estimated that this project will reduce the physical size of the Education collection, which is currently about 72,000 volumes, by 28%.
