Congratulations to these members of the NIU College of Education family!

Brad Hawk, a clinical assistant professor of Educational Administration in the Department of Leadership, Educational Psychology and Foundations, received the Calvin Jackson Career Impact Award from the Illinois Association of School Business Officials.

The award honors Calvin Jackson’s significant service to Illinois ASBO and his leadership within the Statewide School Management Alliance.

Jackson began his career in schools in 1961 as a teacher, counselor and coach. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Southern Illinois University, and spent 18 years as a superintendent in Fairbury before joining the Illinois ASBO team in 1997.

Recipients of this award are active or emeritus school district or service associate members of Illinois ASBO who have demonstrated over the course of their career, a commitment to leverage their expertise to further the quality of the work of Illinois ASBO.

Hawk, who is the Chief School Business Official program coordinator, retired in 2009 from Burlington Central Community Unit School District 301 after five years guiding that suburban system through tremendous growth.

Before that, he served as an assistant superintendent for human resources in Huntley District 158 during its boom years. His career began in downstate Sterling, where he spent 26 years.

He started teaching at NIU as an adjunct in the principal preparation program in 2008, going full time in 2009.

TJ Schoonover

TJ Schoonover, assistant professor in in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education, is the recipient of the
2023 Student Research Award from the Association for Play Therapy (APT).

Schoonover’s dissertation is titled “Child-Centered Play Therapy and Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Single-Case Research Design.”

APT acknowledges outstanding research by graduate or doctoral students that significantly develops, promotes or advances the value of play, play therapy and credentialed play therapists.

The Play Therapy Student Research Award is presented to a researcher (or research team) who:

  • Abided by the code of ethics, standards of practice, and all other legal standards or requirements
    promulgated by those authorities from which researcher has been granted (or will seek) a license.
  • Authored or co-authored original work in the form of a master’s thesis, doctoral dissertation or
    other major research project for which the student is primarily responsible.
  • Authored or co-authored play therapy research that:
    • Demonstrates the value and effectiveness of play and/or play therapy;
    • Increases play therapy knowledge or improves/evaluates play therapy techniques;
    • Significantly elevates/advances the credibility, effectiveness and/or field of play therapy; and
    • Designed and conducted by rigorous standards and appropriately analyzed.

Schoonever will receive a plaque, a $1,500 check and a year’s extension of his professional membership during the APT annual conference in October.
