A Few Faculty Highlights
- Kimberly Hart, clinical assistant professor, was honored with the Illinois Counseling Association Bea Wehrly Human Rights Award.
- Carrie Kortegast, associate professor, recently published two articles.
- Gudrun Nyunt, assistant professor, was selected as the associate editor of The Journal of College and University Student Housing in addition to publishing multiple articles this past year.
- Jacki Mac, assistant professor, recently delivered an Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Kick-Off keynote with Oakton Community College and Northeastern Illinois University.
- Xiaodan Hu, assistant professor, had three grant proposals funded; one project examines merit-based aid and two focus on dual enrollment. In addition to the successful grant proposals, she also published multiple articles this past year.
- Peitao Zhu, assistant professor, published several articles and one of his works was recognized as a top cited article 2020-2021. He also prepared a successful grant application and his study to explore wisdom in counseling counselor education was funded.
- Jehan Hu, assistant professor, published three articles and was the recipient of two awards: the Rigoberta Menchu Award for Advocating for Social Justice from the Alpha Sigma Omega Latina Sorority, Inc, and the 2022 PCPD Together Forward Award, which is presented to an NIU faculty or staff member who has demonstrated leadership, advocacy and awareness for persons with disabilities throughout the course of a student’s college career.
- Melissa Fickling, associate professor, was selected as the 2021 Illinois “Counselor Educator of the Year.” She also has been selected as the 2022 Rachowicz Faculty Fellow for the NIU Honors Program.
- Dana Isawi, assistant professor, published two articles this past year as well as continued her leadership of the Grief and Loss Center in our Community Counseling Training Center.
- Quortne Hutchings, one of our new faculty members, shared his teaching and research interests with the college’s newsletter.

While the landscape of education continues to shift as the educational landscape changes, but our faculty have shown themselves to be extremely flexible and responsive to the meeting the diverse needs of our students. They have become experts at engaging students face-to-face and virtually through online learning platforms and they have much to be proud of as we see another academic year come to a successful close.
