The NIU Foundation has launched “NIU Impact,” a new crowdfunding platform, to support initiatives that include three NIU College of Education projects.

Open now and running through Monday, May 3, the online giving drive is harnessing the power of social media and email to reach and encourage donors to enable students to learn and grow at NIU.

Project Graduate
Many College of Education students struggle to pay for college while balancing personal expenses and family responsibilities. For many licensure students, financial hardships mount during their student-teaching semesters when some give up other jobs or drastically reduce their hours to fulfill the requirements of our partner school districts. Similar issues arise for non-licensure students as they complete internships or capstone projects.

Dr. LaVerne Gyant Mentoring Program
Launching this fall, select undergraduates known as “Dr. G Scholars” will be paired with alumni for one-on-one mentoring along with academic, social and cultural experiences. The program will focus on creating safe and supportive spaces that allow positive relationships, social competence and self-esteem to develop. Participating students also will learn more about valuable resources provided on campus to support their academic success. Next fall, the program will expand to include graduate students known as “Dr. G. Fellows.”

Project FLEX
Kinesiology and Physical Education professors Jenn Jacobs and Zachary Wahl-Alexander and the NIU graduate students who work under their guidance are helping youth make their time in prison more rehabilitative and focused on growth, ultimately lifting their life opportunities post-incarceration. Since its launch in 2018, Project FLEX has reached more than 350 incarcerated youth. The team now hopes to purchase a 10-foot-by-40-foot mobile office trailer to serve as its headquarters at one of the detention centers.
