Hello HESA Community! Happy New Year!

I cannot believe that we are already a few weeks into the spring semester. Fall 2020 definitely brought unique challenges as we transitioned our programs fully online and moved various community activities to virtual platforms. I miss seeing faculty, students, and staff in meetings or as they pass by our faculty offices. Hopefully, 2021 will allow us to return to some in-person activities soon.

For now, our faculty is committed to providing students with a positive learning experience in yet another semester of online instruction.

GSARP, our Graduate Student Admission and Recruitment Program, will also be hosted virtually. Besides getting to meet each other and learning more about the program, our students will have the opportunity to interview for 20+ graduate assistantships.

We are thrilled to welcome back Dr. Emily Prieto-Tseregounis and and Dr. Joshua Moon Johnson as our Graduate Colloquium speakers this year.

Many of you may remember Dr. Prieto-Tseregounis from her time as director of the Latino Resource Center at Northern Illinois University and Dr. Johnson as a doctoral student in Adult and Higher Education (Class of 2011) and assistant director of Marketing and Public Relations for Housing and Dining at NIU. While we wish that the event could happen in person, the virtual format allows us to open the event to our alumni. Please consider joining us for two-hour interactive workshop on Social Justice in Education. See the Upcoming Events section at the end of the newsletter for more information.

You will also see some new features in this newsletter: updates from our partner, the Division of Student Affairs, and our first Alumni Spotlight.

Our “celebrations” section includes many wonderful news: Several of our current students have been recognized with awards; recent graduates have found new opportunities or received promotions, and several of our doctoral students successfully passed their dissertation defenses over the past few months.

It is also good to see the many scholarly activities that our HESA community is engaged in. We hope that you will support each other’s presentations, should you be attending the same conferences. We also hope that you will check out the recent publications and upcoming Webinars from our community members.

Our next newsletter will be sent out in May, so please send any updates, celebrations, scholarly activities, and other announcements to gnyunt@niu.edu by the end of April.

All the Best,

Gudrun Nyunt, Ph.D.
Clinical Assistant Professor & HESA Program Coordinator
