Kyung Kim, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment, will receive three prestigious awards from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).

AECT will hold its annual international conference from Oct. 23 to Oct. 27 in Kansas City, Mo.

Outstanding Development Award
(from the Design and Development Division)

Kim designed and developed a text visual analytic system called Graphical Interface of Knowledge Structure (GIKS), with support from the Center for Online Innovation in Learning and IBM. GIKS is designed to automatically capture, visually represent and statistically compare the knowledge structure hidden in texts; for example, science lesson texts or student essays.

Yanghee Kim, a professor in the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment as well as the College of Education’s Morgridge Endowed Chair in Teacher Education and Preparation, is the co-awardee.

Outstanding Journal Article Award
(from the Distance Learning Division)

Because one of Kyung’s research strands is online learning, he applied the GIKS tool into online learning courses to explore the effects of real-time knowledge structure visual feedback in high school online physics courses. The findings were published by Educational Technology Research and Development, the flagship journal.

Outstanding Journal Article Award
(from the Culture, Learning, and Technology Division)

As his research strands also include language learning, Kyung applied the GIKS tool into cross-language text analysis: GIKS is not language-dependent, and can be applied in any language context and for cross-language comparison and analytics. In one study, he applied GIKS to English Language Learners to explore the effects of knowledge structure visualization on their science reading comprehension. Those findings were published by Educational Technology Research and Development.
